Hair loss in women

Androgenetic alopecia (also known as female pattern baldness, or female pattern hair loss) describes when women permanently lose hair with age. Unlike men, there is more of an overall effect of thinning hair. This tends to be most noticeable around the parting, with hair loss around the hairline being rarer in women.

Hair loss in men

Male pattern baldness is a common, genetic condition that leads to permanent hair loss. Male pattern baldness affects 50% of men over 50 years of age but can also affect men in their 20s.

Initial signs appear as hair thinning on the sides and top of the head, forming a distinctive pattern that sets it apart from other hair loss types.

Impact on Confidence

While not medically serious, male pattern baldness is permanent and can be emotionally distressing, impacting confidence and self-esteem.

Causes of Male Pattern Baldness

Genetics play a pivotal role as male pattern baldness is an inherited condition. The hair follicles on the head, under the influence of testosterone, convert it into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The genetic predisposition causes these follicles to become sensitive to DHT, leading to shrinkage and eventual cessation of hair growth.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

While daily hair loss is normal, certain factors like medication, stress, weight loss, iron deficiency, illness, or skin conditions can contribute. If experiencing sudden or clumped hair loss, consultation with a GP is recommended.

How much hair loss is normal?

On average, we naturally lose 50 to 100 hairs daily. With approximately 100,000 renewing head hairs, it’s generally not concerning. While hair loss is usually normal, at times, it might indicate an underlying medical condition.

Some may face noticeable or even permanent hair loss. While aging can contribute gradually, sudden or patchy loss signals potential medical issues, necessitating timely consultation for proper treatment.

Treatments for Hair Loss in Men and Women

Various treatment options are available to address hair loss and promote regrowth for both men and women:

  • Topical Solutions: Topical medications, such as creams, are applied to areas experiencing thinning hair, offering a targeted approach to stimulate growth.
  • Oral Medications: Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness. Daily tablets are prescribed to help reduce hair loss systematically, providing a convenient and effective treatment option.
  • Light Therapy: Utilising laser therapy, this treatment stimulates hair follicles, promoting improved circulation and encouraging regrowth.
  • Hair Transplantation: Surgical procedures involve the transplantation of hair cells to areas with thinning patches, achieving a natural and lasting result.
  • Scalp Reduction Surgery: This surgical technique removes sections of the bald scalp, followed by stretching and stitching together with a hairy scalp, addressing hair loss in a more extensive manner.
  • Wigs & Hairpieces: For those seeking non-surgical solutions, synthetic or natural human hair wigs and hairpieces offer versatility and a natural appearance, catering to individual preferences.
